Tips Tuesday: Kitten Diarrhea – It’s More Than Just an Upset Stomach
Diarrhea is one of the most common health problems seen in kittens, but it should never be ignored. While it may seem like a minor tummy upset, diarrhea can quickly lead to dehydration and become life-threatening, especially in young kittens.
The good news is that recognizing the signs early and seeking veterinary care when needed can make all the difference.
Common Signs of Diarrhea
Watch for these symptoms:
Loose or watery stool
Frequent trips to the litter box
Straining to defecate
Blood or mucus in the stool
Decreased appetite
Lethargy or weakness
Signs of dehydration, such as dry gums or sunken eyes
If your kitten is acting differently than usual, trust your instincts.
What Causes Diarrhea?
There are many possible causes, including:
Intestinal parasites such as roundworms, coccidia, or giardia
Sudden changes in diet
Bacterial or viral infections
Stress from moving to a new home or environment
Food intolerance or eating something they shouldn’t
A veterinarian can help determine the underlying cause and recommend the proper treatment.
What You Can Do
If your kitten develops diarrhea:
Make sure fresh water is always available.
Monitor how often the diarrhea occurs.
Watch for changes in energy level and appetite.
Keep the litter box clean to help prevent the spread of illness.
Contact your veterinarian if symptoms worsen or don’t improve.
Never give human medications unless your veterinarian specifically instructs you to do so.
When Should You See a Veterinarian?
Seek veterinary care immediately if your kitten:
Has diarrhea lasting more than 24–48 hours
Has blood in the stool
Refuses to eat or drink
Is vomiting
Becomes weak or very sleepy
Shows signs of dehydration
Young kittens can decline quickly, so early treatment is always the safest choice.
