The Story of Evie Hope

Evie Hope was born on Easter Sunday 2021 in the trailer of another rescue group.  They had no idea Mom was pregnant and she was scheduled to be fixed and released at the end of the week. Evie and her siblings were born premature, but they all seemed to be doing well nursing on Mom. Unfortunately, Mom was sick and just four days after her babies were born she was no longer able to care for them.

Evelyn, who volunteered with the group at the time, noticed something tied to Evie's leg that wouldn’t come off (possibly the placenta). At four days old this little itty bitty was rushed to the emergency vet while her siblings were seemingly still nursing on Mom. The vet determined her paw had to be amputated and performed the surgery.

When Evelyn returned to the trailer with Evie, it was unfortunately more bad news. Her other siblings had passed away; Mom was young, maybe six months old, and too inexperienced and sick to care for the children.

At that point, it was 2 AM. Evelyn realized little Evie could not stay with Mom and survive. Although she did not have any experience caring for such a young kitten, Evelyn knew the only way Evie would survive is if she took her home to bottle feed her.

The first night was scary, to say the least. Evie had a heating pad in her carrier and did her first feeding. Kittens less than one week old have to eat every two hours. Evelyn slept in the chair next to Evie keeping watch on her constantly.

But it doesn’t end there. Evie also developed an eye infection. Since her eyes were still closed, all that could be done was to put a cool and warm compress on it to take the swelling down and remove the puss.

Slowly but surely Evie and Evelyn were learning together. Evie started gaining weight and growing into a beautiful young girl. Around her 5 week birthday, she was becoming more energetic and starting to play with her toys and her new feline siblings. One of her siblings is a tripod too, so she is in great hands with our volunteer and founder Evelyn who has since adopted her. Both Evie and Evelyn are great inspirations to us all and we hope you will join us as Evie’s journey continues!
